20-year-old man killed in single vehicle rollover in South Routt

Staff report

TOPONAS — A 20-year-old Grand Junction man died after a pickup violently rolled off the road about three miles south of Toponas.

At about 7:38 a.m. Sunday, Colorado State Patrol troopers were called to the crash near mile marker 30 on Colorado Highway 131.

The driver, Brayan Rodriguez-Peraza, sustained fatal injuries as the 1997 Toyota T100 pickup rolled off the right side of the roadway, according to a news release from the agency.

Rodriguez-Peraza was attempting to negotiate a left-hand curve. He drove off the right side of the road and was unable to correct the vehicle. The truck rolled several times. Rodriguez-Peraza was wearing a seatbelt.

One passenger, an adult woman, was transported to UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center with moderate injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The crash reduced traffic to one lane on Colorado Highway 131 for about two hours Sunday morning, according to a Colorado Department of Transportation alert.

State Patrol is currently investigating the crash. The agency does not suspect impairment or excessive speed contributed to the crash, and no noteworthy weather conditions were apparent at the time of the incident.

Routt County Sheriff’s Office, Routt County EMS, the Routt County Coroner’s Office, Yampa Fire Protection District and CDOT also responded to the incident.

“The Colorado State Patrol wants to remind all drivers to be aware of ever-changing road and weather conditions while visiting the mountains of Colorado,” the agency wrote in the news release.
