We started 2017 experimenting with our new 360-degree camera, and one of the first venues we brought it to was the popular Cowboy Downhill event at Steamboat Resort. Professional cowboys on skis barreled down the mountain for the 43rd annual event. Check it out in 360 degrees:
A week after Routt County Search and Rescue member Jay Bowman was swept away in an avalanche during a mission on Buffalo Pass on Jan. 13, reporter Matt Stensland joined Search and Rescue and Classic Air Medical for a flyover over Fish Creek Canyon. Check it out in 360 degrees.
It wouldn’t be winter in Steamboat Springs without the Winter Carnival, which celebrated 104 years in 2017. Residents and visitors gathered Saturday night of the carnival to see the lighted man, kids skiing with torches and the grand finale fireworks show.
Hayden Wrestling senior Christian Carson used some big moves to make it to the state championship match in mid-February. He was one of three local athletes who wrestled in the finals, along with Jace Logan for Soroco and Steamboat’s Hayden Johnson. Check out some of the moves that got Carson to the finals.
The iconic rock formation that is the namesake for Rabbit Ears Pass underwent a bit of a transformation over the 2016-17 winter, and emerged in the spring looking a little “floppy.”
Firefighters in early July spent weeks battling a wildfire burning northeast of Hayden. The fire started July 1, and contributed to the city of Steamboat Springs’ decision to cancel a Fourth of July fireworks show days later.
