Where there’s a will, there’s a wall
Local attorney builds handball court in parking lot at downtown law office
July 27, 2007
Steamboat Springs — Randy Sulky had been playing handball for most of his life. But when he moved to Steamboat a little more than two years ago, something that had been in his life was taken away.
Sulky couldn’t find a local game of handball.
So after moving his law offices into the McGill Professional Law Corporation at 1107 Lincoln Ave., Sulky found what he’d been looking for. A parking lot in the back of the building proved the perfect spot for a one-wall outdoor handball court.
“I thought this was a great opportunity,” Sulky said. “Our first games were on Saturday. People would be surprised that it’s a pretty popular game in the summertime.”
Sulky isn’t quite sure what he’s hoping to accomplish with the wall, except for getting more people interested in the game.
“I really have a passion for the sport,” he said. “I played three days a week in Memphis for the last 18 years.”

He said he might try to start a league next summer depending on the interest he receives this summer.
“I’m just trying to get the word out,” he said. “Just trying to play more and more and get some people interested.”
Sulky compared the sport to racquetball without the racquet. Players use both hands to hit the ball on a court that’s 20 feet wide and 34 feet long.
Sulky’s also hoping interest in handball may encourage people to vote for a recreation center in November because the dimensions of an indoor racquetball court and handball court are the same.
Either way, Sulky’s just looking for people to play a game he’s always loved.
He plans to be at the court at 5:30 p.m. today and 7:30 a.m. Saturday. He encouraged anyone of any skill level to come out and play.
“I’ve always played it, and I missed it,” Sulky said. “It’s really an interesting game.”
