The art scene that continues to blossom
July 2, 2014
Steamboat Springs — With an art scene that continues to blossom with the passing of every year, the Art on the Mountain event is evidence to the fact there is more to Steamboat than what meets the eye.
"There are a combination of reason as to why vendors want to show their work here," said Loryn Kasten, The PR Manager for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. "The genuine, friendly people in the community make it a great experience. Not to mention, the naturally beautiful setting has a way of enhancing their artwork."
For this year's 13th annual Art on the Mountain event, local and visiting artisans will present a wide variety of work ranging from clothing, jewelry, photography, sculpture, and so much more. The event will take place in Gondola Square starting Thursday, July 3 and will continue through Sunday, July 6. Each day the event will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.
Events that focus on the arts, whether visual or performance, add yet another element to the Steamboat community to create an undistinguishable allure to the town.
"It's important to have a variety of events to have a well rounded community," said Kasten. We always try to exceed the expectations of visitors and locals alike by offering more each year."
For vendor, Erin Kreis from Bent by Erin, a summer event such as Art on the Mountain creates a strong sense of community within the town.

"It's like people are coming out of the woodwork," said Kreis. "It's great that everyone gets out. It's one of my favorite aspects of the summer."
In comparison to events such as the Art in the Park, First Friday Artwalk, or even the weekly Farmer's Market, this eclectic gathering of artisans is on a much smaller scale. The annual event allows about 25 vendors to showcase their work and chat with locals and visitors, all the while enjoying a pristine view of the mountain from the base area.
For local jewelry artist, Kreis, she started making jewelry when her grandmother gave her supplies for a beginner's jewelry making kit. Cultivating her inner artist, Kreis continued on to become an art teacher at Strawberry Park Elementary School and found a renewing sense of virtuosity from the new endeavor.
"I love having the ability to just be creative and let my mind go," she said about her passion for jewelry as a craft. "There is no set agenda, only what's in front of me. I have to just go with the flow."
Using only the most necessary essentials, Kreis uses mixed metals, recycled metals, beads, copper, and sterling silver to create work inspired by Alexander Calder. Finding her artistic niche, she has been developed a notable line of necklaces, earrings, and bracelets for about seven years now.
At the event she looks forward to sharing her craft and speaking with those interested in learning about the artistry that goes into jewelry creations.
