The 2010 Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series kicks off today with the Marabou Cross-Country race.

This will be the third year the Town Challenge has been at the Marabou Ranch preservation subdivision off Routt County Road 42.

Registration for the race begins at 4:30 p.m.

For those who haven't registered early, the cost is $26 for adults and $16 for children. Children's races will begin at 5:30 p.m. with adult races to follow at 6 p.m. There will be parking and registration at the barn with the start of the race at the Outfitters Lodge.

The pro/open, expert and single-speed divisions will follow a 12.5-mile course. All competitors in sport and men's novice divisions, and youths ages 16 to 18, will ride an 8.7-mile course. Novice women will race a six-mile course, and the Miller Lite and rest of the youths will do a 3.5-mile ride.

Unlike some of the events in the Town Challenge series, the Marabou race doesn't feature many uphill sessions.

"It's one of the flattest course we have," said director Gretchen Sehler, noting that the trails at Marabou are in good shape.

"You climb a bit, then it's flat or a downhill. Then you climb and it's a big downhill at the end," she said.

The Drunken Onion will provide barbecue at the end of the race. Dinner for adults and children will start at $6.
