Stay active, age wisely with ongoing classes

Aging Well, a program of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, is helping residents 50 and better stay physically and socially active with ongoing classes in Routt and Moffat counties. Here is an update of current and upcoming fall/winter classes (classes are free unless otherwise noted):
Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
This class is tailored for people with joint and muscle problems as well as those who want to prevent arthritis. Endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation, the class involves a series of exercises that strengthen muscles, helping improve participants’ flexibility and comfort during daily tasks. Exercises may be modified to fit each person’s ability. Intermediate and advanced classes involve moderate aerobic activity to increase circulation. Students should practice movements at least three times a week on their own. Classes are offered once or twice a week. For help determining which class is best for you, call 871-7676.

Poor strength and balance contribute to falls, which are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among older adults. N’Balance classes involve activities and poses that help improve participants’ stability and strength while building confidence. The program includes an assessment of posture, a key component of lower body strength and agility. Beginning and advanced classes are offered targeting different degrees of balance problems. The upcoming advanced class in Steamboat is for students with good mobility who can walk unassisted without a cane or walker. N’Balance classes are being planned in Moffat County. • 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 5 through Dec. 17, Olympian Hall in Steamboat (space is limited and pre-registration is required, call 871-7676).
An ancient Chinese martial art, Tai Chi combines deep breathing and mental concentration with slow and graceful movements. The upcoming Steamboat class involves a series of movements for people who have or want to prevent arthritis. Tai Chi has been found to be particularly effective in relieving arthritic pain because it gently moves all joints, muscles and tendons increasing flexibility and reducing stiffness. It also improves muscle strength needed to keep joints stable. The meditative aspect of Tai Chi also facilitates relaxation and a sense of well-being.

• 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, American Legion (this class is offered through Colorado Northwestern Community College. To enroll, call 871-7676.
Healthy Living with Chronic Conditions
This is a six-session workshop designed to help participants with a wide range of illnesses better manage their conditions while minimizing depression, pain and other symptoms. Discussion topics include communication skills, nutrition, exercise and how diseases affect both patients and family members who provide support. Facilitators encourage participants to set goals and constructively approach set backs. Caregivers/family members are encouraged to attend. The workshops are held on a revolving schedule throughout Routt and Moffat counties. Workshops are planned in Hayden and Steamboat in January 2008. Wellness Wednesdays and more
Moffat County residents can keep their minds and bodies fit with a full day of options during Wellness Wednesdays, an Aging Well program held at the American Legion in Craig. The program features Aging Well activities, such as Arthritis Foundation Fitness, as well as classes offered through CNCC. Participants also enjoy a free lunch and weekly presentations on health and lifestyle topics given by local professionals. CNCC classes are free to residents ages 62 and older, but registration is required. For information, call 871-7676. Drop ins are welcome at Aging Well activities. The current schedule is good through December.
