Stagecoach charter school delayed 1 year

South Routt School Board to hear update at meeting tonight

Zach Fridell

— Stagecoach charter school supporters said they plan to wait one more year before trying to open the preschool to sixth grade school through the South Routt School District.

Instead of aiming for an opening in the 2010-11 school year, the group will try to start the school in the 2011-12 school year. Superintendent Scott Mader is scheduled to update the South Routt School Board on the group’s progress at a meeting at 7:30 tonight.

“We were looking at the student numbers, and starting school the next year would be a stronger start,” said Jane Colby, an organizer for the school.

Colby said the group was going to submit an application to the South Routt School Board this month. After reviewing the nonbinding letters of intent from parents in the Stagecoach area, however, they found they would have more students if they waited another year. Colby said she did not have the number of potential students.

“Basically, we were planning on filing the application this month,” she said. “We’ve pushed that back a year now, and in the meantime, we’ll be doing more work in refining some of the details.”

Those details will include the curriculum for the school as well as a location. Colby said the group had not decided whether it would build a school or try to use an existing spot.

Also on the agenda at tonight’s school board meeting, members will consider updating policy to align with the Colorado Association of School Boards, business manager Dina Murray said.

Although the school board’s policies do not always align with the association’s policies, Murray said the updates, regarding expulsion, homeless students, attendance and open enrollment, are all association updates to conform to state laws.

The board also will hear updates about the construction of the elementary school gym, the Education Fund Board, the district’s greenhouse and its valedictorian policy.
