Police Sgt. Nick Bosick will move into the detective position recently vacated by Matt Harmon. Harmon served as detective since January before taking a position with the District Attorney’s Office.

Bosick, who has been with the department since 1999 and was promoted to sergeant in 2002, will spend the next few months in investigative training.

“It’s kind of a long training process – there’s a lot to learn,” Police Capt. Joel Rae said Wednesday.

Bosick was the only applicant for the detective position. A new sergeant will be chosen from two interested in-house candidates, Rae said.

Former Colorado State Patrol Trooper Rick Kaspar has also joined SSPD, filling one of the department’s vacant police officer positions. Kaspar has worked with State Patrol in the Steamboat area for more than seven years, and he is a certified accident reconstructionist.

“We’d have accident investigators, but not to the caliber of training that he’s received,” Rae said. “He’ll be a huge asset.”

Kaspar began working with SSPD on Nov. 21 and will spend the next two to three months in field training.

School Resource Officer Debra Funston, who has been working at Steamboat Springs High School since 2003, will leave SSPD on Dec. 14. Funston has taken a public education position with Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, and she will be replaced at the school by Officer Josh Carrell.

Carrell began training with Funston at Steamboat Springs High School this week, Rae said.
