Steamboat Springs — The National Weather Service has issued a snow advisory for Steamboat Springs.
According to the advisory, significant snowfall accumulations are expected tonight as the temperatures drop. Between 6 and 13 inches of snow could fall in downtown Steamboat by Saturday night. The advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. today to 6 p.m. Saturday.
The advisory also states:
“The second potent winter storm of December continues to develop. A moist west to southwest upper flow will continue to bring very deep moisture to eastern Utah and western Colorado into Saturday.
A developing trough of low pressure over the Great Basin will bring colder unstable air over the region beginning tonight and lasting into the weekend. Mountain snow accumulations and gusty winds will increase tonight and Friday.

If you plan to travel across the mountains of eastern Utah and western Colorado beginning tonight:prepare for winter driving conditions. Mountain roads will be icy and snow packed. Also be alert for areas or reduced visibility in snow and blowing snow:especially over high mountain passes.”
Today’s high temperature is forecast at 38 degrees, with the thermometer dipping to a low of 22 tonight. Similar high and low temperatures are forecast for Friday, with temperatures gradually decreasing over the weekend.
The storm system is expected to leave the area Sunday, although cooler temperatures will prevail into the middle of next week.
The Steamboat Ski Area reported 5 inches of new snow overnight Wednesday and early this morning. The ski area is operating six lifts and 32 trails.
