Sailors volleyball shows off in win vs. Delta

Luke Graham

— The Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team played one of its most complete games of the year Friday, downing Delta, 3-0.

Steamboat was impressive in all three games, winning 25-17, 25-13 and 25-12.

“The win is important, but the way we played was more valuable,” Steamboat coach Wendy Hall said. “They felt good about their game. I think they feel really good about going into (today). This set the tone for (today’s) match.”

Steamboat, 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the Western Slope League, continues action at 1 p.m. today at Steamboat Springs High School when the team welcomes Palisade.

And judging by Friday’s performance, Steamboat should be as confident as the team has been all year.

Hall said that after a great week of practice, Steamboat came out and imposed its will.

Behind Matthia Duryea, Jayde Mattox and Kelsey Butler, the Sailors were able to convert most of their passes. The three Sailors had 25 perfect passes, allowing Steamboat’s offense to click.

“Offensively, when we’re passing well, it’s easier on the setters,” Hall said. “Then the setters can have more accurate sets. It just keeps the offense running.”

Hall said Steamboat still will have to play better against Palisade – a scrappy team known for its ability to keep the ball alive.

“We have to go into (today) and repeat that performance,” she said. “We’ll see better serves and have to work more” today.
