In her photos, Lynne Garell likes to show people what they can't see.
Using a macro lens made to take close-up shots, Garell captures in her pictures the underside of a flower, the details of an iris bud or the individual parachutes of a garden weed.
"It takes you into another world. You get patterns and shapes that you don't see with your naked eye, and I just have a lot of fun with that," Garell said, pointing out details in her photos Wednesday afternoon at The Cutting Room salon on Weiss Drive.
A reception for "Not Your Usual View," a collection of Garell's close-up shots, is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at The Cutting Room. The show will be on display at least through ski season.
Taking normal objects and shooting them from a view that makes them look extraordinary, Garell focuses on geometric patterns and vivid colors in her work. A Steamboat Springs resident for the past 10 years, Garell has shown her photos at Center for Visual Arts. "Not Your Usual View" is her first solo show.
With a 30-year career in graphic design, Garell has pursued photography as a hobby since college, she said. After she and her husband moved to Steamboat Springs, she started taking classes with local photographer and teacher Karen Schulman, owner of photo workshop and tour provider Focus Adventures.

The classes reignited Garell's interest in taking photos, she said. "Not Your Usual View" includes distorted or extremely close-cropped images of flowers, natural springs and brightly colored window panes.
Jeny Nathan, who owns The Cutting Room with David Cullen, said she has been interested in sprucing up the salon's wall space since taking over partial ownership in 2008. Garell is a client of Nathan's, and the idea for the show has been in the works since spring, Garell said.
Nathan hopes to showcase fresh art every once in a while and is interested in hearing from artists who might like to organize a show, she said.
