Old Town Hot Springs Wellness Challenge starts Saturday

Steamboat Springs — Although Marietta Roberts is fairly new to her role as fitness director at the Old Town Hot Springs, she said she has seen it all throughout her 25 years in the fitness industry.
"Nutrition has changed, people have changed, and people are working way more than before," Roberts said.
Because of this, she has developed a new kind of challenge for the Steamboat Springs community.
She calls it "The Biggest Winner Wellness Challenge," and it will start at the Old Town Hot Springs Fitness Center at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3 and will end on Feb. 28.
Although the local fitness center has held a similar challenge in previous years, this will be the first time Roberts is in charge of the program.
"We want people to know that it's not only for losing weight," Roberts said. "That is part of it but it's also about losing body fat or gaining muscle or if you just want to get back into a routine. It's a good motivation, and it teaches people about getting fit and healthy the right way."

This Saturday will be the first consultation with either Roberts or Rebecca Williams, Old Town Hot Springs’ other trainer. The two women will give each participant a 10-minute consultation to gauge what each individual's health goals are and how to achieve them. They also will weigh individuals privately, record body fat and measure the person’s waist as a starting point for the eight-week challenge.
The trainers both said the program is about helping participants reach their goals and creating a fitness plan best suited for each individual.
At the end of the challenge, prizes will be awarded to the male and female participants who lose the highest percentage of their body weight and to all participants based on their points total.
The point system includes a variety of health and wellness activities such as a fitness assessment with a personal trainer or attending a free nutrition presentation. It also includes an array of fitness and recreation activities.
For example, if a participant were to attend a group exercise class, he or she would earn 10 points. If 30 minutes of a participant's time were dedicated to working out in the fitness center, that person would be awarded five points. If it were an hour, 10 points would be earned.
Each participant will be given a card that lists the point system and a chart that they can use to keep track of their points on a daily basis. Every two weeks, the trainers will record the information on a spreadsheet to track each participant and make sure he or she is making progress toward their goals.
According to Roberts, all participants will receive discounted guest rates during the challenge.
Adults 18 and older who are Old Town Hot Springs members can participate for $35. The non-members cost to participate is $125, which allows them access to the pool, fitness classes and workout equipment.
"You really do reach your goals faster with a trainer than you would by yourself," Roberts said. "We will keep you accountable and make sure you are on track but you also have to be ready to do the work."
