Layoffs affect 16 at Ski and Resort Corp.
Diamond: Not all impacted workers will lose jobs outright

Steamboat Springs — This week’s layoffs affected 16 Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. employees, Ski Corp. President Chris Diamond confirmed Thursday.
Not all of those workers will lose their jobs, he said; some could go to part-time or seasonal positions.
Intrawest, Ski Corp.’s parent company, announced cuts and realignments in a news release Wednesday. The Vancouver, B.C.-based company owns or operates 11 resorts in North America, including Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia and Copper Mountain and Winter Park in Colorado.
“Impacted employees have been offered access to outplacement services to help in their transition,” Intrawest’s news release stated. “Although these are difficult decisions for us, our vision remains consistent, and we are committed to delivering exceptional experiences for our guests, homeowners and employees.”
Intrawest spokesman Ian Galbraith said Wednesday the company wasn’t planning to reduce services. The Steamboat Ski Area is slated to open Nov. 26, and Copper Mountain and Winter Park are up and running.
Galbraith would not say which Intrawest resorts were affected and declined to comment further Thursday. He said the company would not give numbers of how many employees were affected by layoffs.

“We’re proceeding with business as usual at all our resorts and looking forward to the 2008-09 season,” Galbraith said Wednesday.
Diamond would not provide numbers Thursday for where ski season bookings stand in Steamboat, saying such numbers were meaningless because they changed frequently.
“Things are improving,” he said. “We’ve still got our work cut out for us.”
