— The Steamboat Springs High School Knowledge Bowl team proved its mental prowess during a possible record-setting finish Friday in Walden.

“I’ve never seen such a high score before in my years of coaching,” said Barb Tuchlinsky, who has coached the team for seven years.

Tuchlinsky said Steamboat’s “A team,” led by senior Sam Chovan and juniors Charlie Stoddard and Anna Roder, achieved a score of 154 – almost double the score of the team’s closest competitor.

“The next-highest overall score I’ve ever seen was 128,” she said. “I’ve never seen any team go over 130 in my years of coaching.”

Steamboat’s B team, led by juniors Miriam Pensack and Sean Fairlie and sophomore Aiden Rohde, scored 44 points for a third-place tie with Middle Park’s B team. North Park’s A team placed second in the meet.

“Our A and B teams do not always have the same team members competing. Sometimes we have only one team of four or five players,” Tuchlinsky said. “(Last) week, we split into two teams of three members each in order to have three teams competing at once in each competition room.”

Knowledge Bowl competitions challenge teams to showcase knowledge in a variety of topics covering a wide-range of historical periods.

“I am continually amazed at what our students know and how quickly they can answer difficult questions,” Tuchlinsky said.

The team’s next meet is Jan. 19 in Craig. Steamboat hosts the following meet Feb. 8.

Knowledge Bowl, which is a non-funded district activity, is seeking a corporate or individual sponsor to help fund the team’s travel expenses for such competitions as the state meet. To help sponsor the Knowledge Bowl team, call Tuchlinsky at 871-3689.
