— Denver resident Julie Federico has taken photos for most of her life. This fall, she decided to try to sell them.

A new dedication to her art and a recently released children's book about personal safety led Federico to Off the Beaten Path Bookstore, where she held a book signing and art opening during the February First Friday Artwalk. Her work will be on display at the store through the end of the month.

The images at Off the Beaten Path are a burst of spring. Close-up depictions of flowers are one of Federico's specialties. Her new photography business, Favorite Flower Photography, offers shots of favorite blooms for clients so they can keep a bouquet handy year-round, Federico said.

"They're just cheerful," Federico said about the photos, many of them taken at the Denver Botanic Gardens in August and September.

Inspiration struck Federico while she was working on publishing and promoting a book about children's safety. Taking pictures and setting up art shows was a nice break from marketing the book, she said.

"In the middle of it I just kind of decided to do this just because it brings me happiness, and it's easy, and it's fun," Federico said.

Along with several framed prints hanging on the walls at Off the Beaten Path, Federico has stocked the store with inexpensive postcards and greeting cards. Images of her work start at 50 cents and go up to $80 for this show.

As she concentrates more on photography, Federico is starting to get into photographing events. Her first wedding assignment is Saturday, she said. Her floral work on display in Steamboat zooms in on brightly hued flowers, giving the subjects "most of the credit in the picture," Federico said.
