Hayden potluck is Saturday
Yampa Valley Feeds hosts 2nd supper and barn dance this year
June 25, 2010
Steamboat Springs — Yampa Valley Feeds owner Tammie Delaney said last month's Community Potluck Supper and Barn Dance in Hayden was such a success that she decided to host another.
The second incarnation is at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hayden Grain Elevator. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with basic swing dance instruction at 7:30 p.m. and country swing dancing at 8 p.m. All ages are welcome.
The potluck and barn dance are free. People just need to bring a main dish, side, salad or dessert to share.
Delaney said it was common in the 1960s and 1970s and even long before that for community dances to rotate through towns in the valley. While she was working on Vision 2030, she said the topic of community dances kept coming up.
"Community dances were the thing," Delaney said. "I think through the years of technology — e-mails, computer games and TV — I think we lost that. It was a heck of a lot of fun last month for the sake of people coming together just to have a good time."
Delaney said there's not many opportunities for the community to get together just for fun. She said it seems like most times people get together for town meetings or to discuss contentious issues. Outside of church and school functions, Delaney said it's difficult for community members to get to know their neighbors.

"This is an opportunity to get the community together in a fun environment," she said.
Delaney estimated about 130 people came to the potluck and barn dance in May.
During Saturday's event, the Hayden Heritage Center will display memorabilia illustrating Hayden's rich quarter horse history. She said local artist Don Beeler also will show clay sculptures of Old Fred and Peter McCue, two famous quarter horses from Hayden.
