— The character, unique charm and western heritage of Steamboat Springs will be on full display this weekend as the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club hosts the 2017 Winter Carnival. The Steamboat Pilot & Today news team will be right in the center of the action, and this year, the newspaper is offering a new and unique perspective for our online audience.

Steamboat Today has timed the launch of its new Wish You Were Here project to coincide with Winter Carnival — an event that brings together so many of the things that make Steamboat special — snow, skiing, horses, fireworks and community. In addition to our traditional coverage, you'll also be able to experience the soda pop slalom, skijoring and the spectacular fireworks show from a new 360-degree vantage point.

Wish You Were Here is a new 360 video project that we're embarking on, which will allow our audience, near and far, to immerse themselves in the Steamboat Springs experience. Through the use of a 360 camera, our photographers are able to capture video that offers 360-degree views of an event or a place or an experience. Readers are invited to step inside the action and navigate through it themselves.

The New York Times has been experimenting with daily 360 videos since November, and we're excited for our reporters to begin using the new tool, which we believe enhances our storytelling and offers another level of engagement for our readers.

The overarching premise of the Wish You Were Here project is to give people an opportunity to see for themselves what Steamboat Springs and the surrounding area have to offer. Our 360 video efforts will focus on giving readers an inside look at Steamboat's signature events, activities and attractions, especially those that lend themselves to a 360-degree experience.

Through this new technology, our readers can take a virtual trip up the gondola to Thunderhead, ride along with a snow cat as it grooms the slopes of historic Howelsen Hill or take a peek at some of our favorite runs at Steamboat Ski Area.

I encourage you to click the Steamboat 360 tab or the Wish You Were Here image on the homepage of SteamboatToday.com to experience a few of our 360 videos. We'll be adding at least two new 360 videos per week to our website, and we'd love to get your feedback.

This project was made possible through the Swift 360 Initiative, and the Wish You Were Here premise was created by Steamboat Today journalists Matt Stensland, John Russell, Scott Franz and Joel Reichenberger.

Because 360 video is an emerging technology, we're definitely in the experimental stages of using it, so we'd welcome audience feedback. Please feel free to email me directly at lschlichtman@steamboattoday.com with your thoughts about our 360 videos, and I would also love to know if you have any ideas for future videos.

To promote our new Wish You Were Here project, we have printed postcards that are available for free at Off the Beaten Path, the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association offices and the Steamboat Pilot & Today office, 1901 Curve Plaza.
