Election Forum tonight

Pilot & Today hosts City Council, School Board candidates

— The Steamboat Pilot & Today hosts its 2007 Election Forum tonight, posing questions to candidates for Steamboat Springs City Council and Steamboat Springs School Board. The forum also will cover two topics on the ballot for local voters: the proposed $34 million recreation center at Ski Town Fields and its associated tax increase for operation and maintenance, and Routt County’s proposed tax increase for road improvements.

Pilot & Today editor Brent Boyer, who will moderate the forum, said the event is another opportunity for voters to gauge the candidates who will fill ballots across Steamboat Springs.

“Candidate forums are a great way for residents to learn about the candidates who wish to represent them,” Boyer said. “We’ll try to keep our forum moving and on subject, and we hope members of the community take a little time out of their hectic schedules to listen to the candidates address issues important to our community.”

All candidates will be given time for opening statements, answers to prearranged questions and closing statements. Due to time constraints and the large number of candidates, no questions will be taken from the audience.

At the end of the forum, supporters and opponents of the ballot issues will give five-minute presentations.

Routt County Commissioner Diane Mitsch Bush will speak in support of Referendum 1A, the county’s proposed tax increase to fund road improvements. Speaking in opposition to the referendum will be Steamboat Springs resident Chuck Baker.

Supporters of a new recreation center at Ski Town Fields will speak in favor of Referendums 2B and 2C. An opposing speaker will be determined before the forum.

For those who can’t make it tonight, Steamboat tv18 will rebroadcast the event twice a week – 7 p.m. Thursdays and 10 p.m. Mondays – until the election Nov. 6.

“We’re incredibly excited to have Steamboat tv18 taping Monday’s forum,” Boyer said. “Broadcasting the forum on TV will allow a significant percentage of Steamboat’s population to see and hear the candidates from the comfort of their homes when they may not have been able to attend in person.”
