Day of giving in Steamboat to benefit Haiti relief

— With the old building in crumbles and the children living in a rented apartment, the Haitian orphanage that Tracy and Nick Metzler have become benefactors of has been in a state of disarray since the earthquake struck Jan. 12.

But with the help of the Metzlers and others, the orphanage has relocated to a temporary home in preparation for a new space.

To fill that need, and to complete the goal of expanding the orphanage, the Wish for Haiti organization is holding a day of giving Friday in Steamboat Springs, with local businesses pledging a set donation amount or a portion of their proceeds for the day.

The Metzlers were preparing to help expand the campus at the Orphelinat Pour Files, translated as the House of the Children of the Lack, where they adopted daughter Fena in 2009. But after the earthquake hit, the need became more dire.

"Now, it's a little bit more urgent because their home was destroyed completely," Tracy Metzler said.

The Metzlers are visiting HaiĀti within the next couple of weeks, she said, to look at possible sites for the new campus.

The group has raised about $200,000 in about two years of fundraising, but the goal is closer to $500,000 to cover the land, buildings and facilities that would allow the orphanage to rebuild and possibly expand from 30 to 50 children.

Some businesses have pledged to donate 20, 50 or even 100 percent of the proceeds from the day of giving, and others have pledged a set donation amount.

Tracy Metzler said donations have come from all across the country, with elementary schools, colleges and businesses donating money.

"We're just hoping to raise as much as we possibly can," she said. "We know we probably can't raise the full amount needed on this one day."

Businesses including Alpine Pro Tint, Pilates on the Rock, Embellishments, Waterside Day Spa and Salon, State Farm Insurance and Riggio's RistorĀante have pledged to participate in Friday's event, and Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. will provide donations from Bear River Bar and Grill and from donation boxes at the ski area.

Metzler said other businesses are welcome to participate and sign up until the day before the event. Business owners can call Tracy Metzler at 879-8460 or e-mail wishforhaiti@hotmail.com.
