Cleanup day is Saturday in Steamboat Springs

Volunteers asked to help remove trash, plant flowers

— Folks in and around Steamboat Springs are invited to pitch in to help beautify the city Saturday during the annual Green Up, Clean Up Day.

The event starts with coffee and doughnuts at 8:30 a.m. at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. From there, teams will go out to pick up trash and plant flowers across town, City Parks Supervisor Ernie Jenkins said. The cleanup segment runs from 9 a.m. to noon and ends with free lunch back at the Community Center.

Jenkins said city staff members estimate that this is the 25th annual Green Up, Clean Up Day, but no one is quite sure.

“I go back 17 years, but this event goes back a little before me,” he said.

The turnout is typically good, Jenkins said, estimating that 75 people participated last year. Volunteers will plant flowers and do landscaping works at parks, as well as help beautify Lincoln Avenue.

“There’s more of a flower theme to it than picking up trash, not to compete with the county’s thing,” Jenkins said, referring to Routt County’s Highway Clean-Up Day last month. “But we are going to need a little more help this year because it’s going to be a bit of a challenge to hang the flower baskets on Lincoln Avenue.”

Participants are asked to bring work gloves and water. The event typically is held rain or shine — although snow caused a cancellation one year, Jenkins said.

There’s no need to RSVP to participate, he said.

“If people show up, we’ll put them to work, and we appreciate the help. We get an awful lot of work done that one morning, thanks to all the volunteers who come out.”
