City tennis championships begin

Steamboat Springs — The 2007 Steamboat City Tennis Championships begin at 6 p.m. today at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs with singles play in the first eight round-robin matches in the men’s and women’s Masters Division.
Sixteen of the city’s top players – eight men and eight women – will vie in singles for the honor of Steamboat’s best player. Each eight-player group will be divided into two, four-player round robins.
Deborah Davie, Fabiola Katthain, Molly Weiss and Meg Tully will compete in the U.S. Open bracket of the Ladies Division, while Emilie Rogers, Anya Cooper, Patrice Lorenzen and Stacy Swiggart will compete in the Wimbledon bracket.
In the men’s division, Steamboat Springs High School’s newly crowned state champion, Ramsey Bernard, will play against Ian Pritchard, Brad Miller and Ed Mooney in the Men’s Australian bracket, while Andy Caress, the Tennis Center’s new professional, Jamey Swiggart, Jeff Oeherlin and Dave Schaller will compete in the Men’s French Open bracket.
The winners in the women’s and men’s brackets will play at 10 a.m. Sunday for their respective championships.
In other divisions, 70 players will compete for their division championships, including men’s and women’s 3.0 through men’s 4.5 singles and doubles. Steve Harrison is seeded No. 1 in men’s 4.0 and joins his partner, Paul Hughes, as the No. 1 seed in men’s 4.0 doubles.

Many of the draws feature round-robin formats guaranteeing players a lot of play throughout the weekend. Matches will continue at 4 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
The center is hosting an adult Racket Demo Day with Babalot, the racket of choice of Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Rackets ordered that evening will be discounted, and the Adult Demo Day will feature a prize court. Registration is not required but is appreciated. Attendance is free.
