Celebrating Memorial Day weekend in Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs — The unofficial start to summer has finally arrived.
Memorial Day sparks a weekend of barbecues with friends and family, but it’s first and foremost a holiday to remember and honor those who sacrificed everything for their country.
Whether you plan to attend a memorial service, lounge by the pool or get your fill of brats and sunshine, here are a few options for celebrating the long weekend.
Remembering our Veterans
Memorial Day Service
Memorial Day Service | 11 a.m. | Monday, May 30 | Steamboat Springs Cemetery (meet at Steamboat Springs Transit Center, 1463 13th St.) | Free
Attend the local Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday with Veterans of VFW Post 4264 and American Legion Post 44, who will conduct the service to honor those who have served in the armed forces. The service will be held at the Veterans Memorial at Steamboat Springs Cemetery. Steamboat Springs Transit will provide bus service to the cemetery from the transit center west of town.

Learn more about the buildings you drive past every day by joining members of the city of Steamboat Springs Historic Preservation Commission and city planning staff for a 12-block walking tour. The tour starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at Centennial Hall (10th and Oak streets) and concludes with free refreshments at noon at the Tread of Pioneers Museum (Eighth and Oak streets).
Plan on staying in town this weekend? Attend a new event or workshop you've never had an opportunity to take part in, or explore a hiking trail or bike route you've never visited before.
Bird Walk | 8 to 10 a.m. | Saturday, May 28 | Carpenter Ranch, 13250 U.S. Highway 40, Hayden
Take a walk with the Yampa Valley Birding Club for a two-hour guided bird walk at the Nature Conservancy’s Carpenter Ranch, home to more than 150 species of migratory and nesting birds. Bring binoculars and wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

Steamboat's state parks will begin offering spring and summer events this weekend. The workshops range in themes for all ages.
Enjoy the Outdoors

Participate in a day of outdoor games and activities by joining the interpretive ranger at the Yampa River State Park.
Discovery Station-Skulls | 11 a.m. to noon | Saturday, May 28 | Yampa River State Park, 6185 W. U.S. Highway 40, Hayden
A naturalist will be onsite at the swim beach area to discuss how to identify various animal skulls. In the event of rain, the program will be moved to the Camper Services Building of the Steamboat Lake State Park.

The Americana group from Sheridan, Wyoming, will have its debut at the Hahn's Peak Roadhouse as part of its album release tour. This will be a Memorial Day dinner show.
