Jonathan Tyler brings energetic live show to Ghost Ranch

Emotion Brown, vocalist and tambourine player with Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, performs Jan. 14 at the Steamboat Music Tent in the Knoll Parking Lot. Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights perform at 9 p.m. today at Ghost Ranch Saloon.

— Texas blues rocker Jonathan Tyler started out writing songs for small, coffee-house-style concerts. When venues started to call him back for more shows, he needed a band to take things to the next, louder level.

He gathered local musicians and formed Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, an essentially classic rock band out of Dallas with heavy blues influences and a bombastic live show. The group plays at 9 p.m. today at Ghost Ranch Saloon.

Tyler has trouble putting exact labels on the songs his band produces — they just write the songs they want to write and play them the way they think they should be played.

"We just do what we like, and that's really the most important thing, is just making sure we love what we're playing and we're enjoying what we're doing, and I don't think we think too much about what it is," Tyler said.

The band appeared at The MusicFest at Steamboat and Ski Jam earlier this winter; the group comes to Ghost Ranch Saloon after a weekend-long set of shows at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. Three years after The Northern Lights formed, Tyler and his band continue to embrace an energetic live set.

"We're really into live music. We're really into unique moments, special moments, so we aren't overly meticulous with planning. We kind of go with the flow and really feed off the energy of the crowd," Tyler said. "We're really into blues music and rock 'n' roll music, so we try to mix the two and make it really high-energy and fun."
