Best Wings (and Outdoor Dining): Aurum Food & Wine

Some feathers have been ruffled in the Best Wings category, folks.

Unseating five-time, finger-lickin' chicken champion The Tap House Sports Bar & Grill from a half-decade of sitting on the wing throne is this year's wing champ Aurum Food & Wine, at 811 Yampa St. on the Yampa River.

Billing itself as offering “A new element in dining," the restaurant has brought that to the wing world, thanks to executive chef Patrick Funk.

"It's actually not even a chicken wing," says owner Phil Armstrong. "It's an Asian-style duck wing, with a sweet soy-style sauce. But people seem to like them."

Best Outdoor Dining: Aurum

Like to eat your wings and other fine dining fare to the sound and sight of rushing water? Aurum is the spot for that as well, winning the Best Outdoor Dining category. "Our location along the river is one of our biggest assets," says owner Phil Armstrong. "People love eating on the deck and in our riverfront dining room; some people even get upset if they can't."

Armstrong also touts the restaurant's new private event space upstairs, complete with a new heated awning system, that lets patrons gaze out across the river to Howelsen Hill.

This fall, diners will also be able to enjoy a special destination menu Sept. 15 to Dec. 1, offering a choice of four different, three-course destination-themed meals — from the Carolinas, Scandinavia, Italy and India — for $30. Each country's theme will be carried for two weeks at a time, alongside its regular menu.

The secret, he says, is the sauce, a dark, viscous concoction with a special ingredient: Butcherknife Brewery's stout, mixed in perfectly with an array of spices. "It's a key ingredient and is great local connection," he says.

Garnished with sesame seeds and green onion, the wings are offered, along with the rest of Aurum's bar menu, for half price during its daily happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m.

All this isn't to say that Armstrong feels he has a corner on the wing market. Au contraire, he says. "There are a lot of great wings in town," he says, crediting wings from the Tap House as well as dry-rub wings from Moe's and Carl's Tavern. "They're just a great, easy-to-eat menu item."
