Best Hairstylist: Brooke Engeseth
October 13, 2016
Steamboat Springs — Elaborate hairstyles, blow-out hair bars and New York-esque beauty lounges are a rarity in Steamboat Springs.
Here, hair is simple, low-maintenance and has to look good when taking a ski or bike helmet off.
"Women want to look good while being active," says Brooke Engeseth, hair stylist from the Hair on Earth salon. "They want to be out living their regular life, but have their hair look good without much effort."
Finding the right "look" is a knack that comes effortlessly to this year's Best Hairstylist — an aptitude that soon morphed into a career.
For the past 11 years in Steamboat, hair has been this Iowa-native's area of expertise. She acquired the skills and resources needed for her career in hair after graduating from the Minneapolis Aveda Institute in 2003, giving her in-depth training known for its styles inspired by fashion runways.
"I always knew, even when I was a little girl, that I want to be a professional hairstylist," Engeseth says.

But it's a multifaceted workload, she says.
"You have to be able to connect with the client, personally and professionally," she says. "Even if a client likes the way you do her hair, if she doesn't like you as a person, she won't feel comfortable going back. It's about having that combination of the two — doing a good job and having that personal relationship."
From balayage to ombre and even the natural wavy look, Engeseth knows how to implement the latest industry trends on Steamboat locals. "I have my dream job," she says. "My husband and I tried leaving Steamboat twice. But it's this dream job that kept bringing me back."
