"The barbecue is different from other fundraisers because it is an event," said Tina Harlow, one of the event organizers. "It brings us all together. During the winter months, we are so busy snowblowing and shoveling. Summer comes, and we all get to kick back and enjoy this beautiful place that we live."

Harlow said that each year the event has grown with more people coming from surrounding communities to experience "the simple, down-home pleasures" this event has to offer.

"This is our biggest fundraising event at the charter school, and it's a great event that locals look forward to every year and that kids love," said Stephanie Muhlbauer, who has been in charge of organizing the event the past four years.

Last year, Muhlbauer said the event raised over $17,000, which was a record amount.

This year, more activities have been added to the event. Classic Air Medical will be flying a helicopter in for the barbecue and one of the silent auction items is a helicopter ride. Other items up for auction include a hot air balloon ride, a trip to a cottage in Panama, an extended night stay at a cabin in North Routt and baskets with a variety of goods and a vast assortment of artwork.

"The community loves this event because it allows everyone to leave the responsibilities of the world behind and just eat, drink and be merry the good old-fashioned way," Harlow said. "Everyone leaves with a smile."
