Getting Ready for Tuesday Editorial Board
Tuesday is Editorial Board day at the Steamboat Today. There are five members of the Editorial Board — Me, Editor Brent Boyer, Columnist Tom Ross and community representatives Laura Schmidt and Jim Miller. We meet every Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. to hash out the stances that the Editorial Board will take in editorials published Wednesday and Sunday.
Doing more to engage the public
Last week, I took a trip to the Northeast to take my daughter to visit Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The trip gave me an excuse to slip down to Torrington, Conn. to the Register Citizen, a newspaper that is doing some pretty creative stuff to bring their community into their newsroom.
Near the end
The end is near and it's too soon to sum up what's just happened. Of course all the focus here is on the U.S.-Canada hockey game Sunday. It's a frenzied scene. I spent time in Vancouver tonight and every conversation involves the game, it seemed. It also seems most of ...
Nordic Combined primer, Feb. 25
The conditions are overcast and cloudy. The sun looks like it's trying to spit through. It will be interesting to see what happens for the cross-country portion of the race and if the Americans can get their wax set straight. A look at the contenders: —World cup leader, small hill ...
Steamboat's solid Olympic connection
A funny thing happened the other day in Whistler, British Columbia. After 10 days away from my home and family, in a town where it rains more than it snows, I bumped into three guys who reminded me that the world isn’t all that big, and if you are at ...
Remembering Robbins in Vancouver
Somewhere, Paul Robbins is looking down watching the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and he is smiling. He would have loved the scenic backdrop of British Columbia, he would have loved the atmosphere that surrounds these games, and he would have loved all the ski action that is unfolding on the slopes. ...
Nordic combined primer
The Nordic combined team competition will officially begin at 11:30 a.m. MST. It appears like it will be a seven team race for the three medals, with Austria, Germany, Norway, Japan, Finland, France and the United States battling it out. Austria is the defending Olympic champion and leading the FIS ...
How sweet it was
All week — on the bus, in the mixed media zones, in pubs and on the streets — all I heard was how the United States had no shot Sunday against Canada in hockey. Thanks to Ryan Miller, the Americans certainly had a good shot. I watched the first period ...
Excitement brewing
No matter where you go, people are asking if the U.S. Nordic combined team can win the team event on Tuesday. In a word, absolutely. Looking at the splits in the short hill event and seeing where the Americans were at the 5K point, there's no doubt they'll be in ...
Vancouver
On a blue bird day in Vancouver I'm not sure if I've ever seen so many people in my life. The streets are packed, it's impossible to get around in a vehicle and darn near impossible in a bus. The ride in from Cypress Mountain took about 45 minutes longer ...
Vonn-Couver
The women's downhill event was like nothing I'd ever seen. From the amount of media, seemed like there were thousands, to Lindsey Vonn's gold medal and Julia Mancuso's silver. In the mixed media zone, where all the reporters convene like cows in a pen, there was no room to move. ...
Alpine and Macedonia
The downhill event was epic. There might not be a better fan base than the downhill fans that follow it. There were 6,000 plus spectators there on Monday. The Swiss and Austrians are the best. One Swiss guy had a bell he was ringing that was the size of a ...
Johnny's in high demand
It's Monday morning and I’ve spent the past couple of hours trying to get in touch with Johnny Spillane to find out what the past 12 hours have been like. I’m starting to think I have a better chance of winning the lottery - but the difficulty is very understandable. ...
Slowing down
Things are a little bit slower for us now. Doesn't mean we're not doing anything, but after the historical day for the U.S. Nordic combined team, a little break isn't bad. It'll be hard to replicate the energy felt in Whistler on Sunday. From a very good crowd at the ...
One final thought on moguls event
The crowd Saturday at Cypress Mountain was phenomenal. I'd compare it to an American football game. It reminded me of a Saturday rivalry game. It was every bit as good as many college and NFL games I've been to. The qualification round begin at 4:30 p.m. Gates opened at 1:30 ...
Audible excitment
The Nordic combined event is booming. A real good crowd has shown up. Interesting fact of the day is Nordic combined and biathlon are the only two sports the United States has never won a medal in. Here's a look at the events the U.S. has won a medal in. ...
Enjoying Whistler
Checking out the Canada ski town vibe after a busy day at Whistler Olympic Park.
Cypress Mountain
Clearly Cypress Mountain has had a tough year. Besides the moguls course — which looks to be in good shape — the rest of the mountain is bare with brown spots. The weather could play a big factor in today's event. It's gone from blowing rain, to blowing snow, to ...
Local feel
Met several locals in a pub after the Nordic combined today. It seems most are 50/50 on the Olympics. There are those that worry about the costs (estimated $1.6 billion to put it on) and the inconveniences it brings to the day-in, day-out routine. Others, like a guy named Dan ...
Nordic Combined training
John and I just got our first look at the Nordic combined complex. It's pretty neat what they've done, and it's very similar to Howelsen Hill in its layout.
