The Democratic National Convention is in Denver for the first time in 100 years, and the Steamboat Pilot & Today is on site all week to cover a momentous event that has turned the spotlight on the West as a new battleground region. Throughout the week, City Editor Mike Lawrence and I are filing stories, photos and audio clips from Denver. They can be found in the print edition of our newspaper and on Steamboatpilot.com. Additionally, look to this blog for additional news and notes, lighthearted commentary and other observations that will compliment our traditional coverage. For example:

• The DNC is quite the media circus. Journalists outnumber delegates at the convention 15,000 to 4,400. CNN has an enormous presence. In a brick building outside the Pepsi Center, they even have their own grill open only to their personnel. On their neon sign: "CNN Grill: Burgers, Beer and Politics." Inside the Pepsi Center, personalities such as Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper look like Super Bowl sportscasters on their stage on the convention floor. • At rallies and marches, there seems to be a police officer and a journalist for every protester. • The Steamboat Pilot & Today name doesn't command the best seats in the Pepsi Center, but one advantage to the obstructed view behind the stage is a view of the teleprompter that gives us a distinct, 2-second advantage over CNN in knowing what the big names are going to say, before they say it.
