I am appalled by the narrow minded selfish attitudes I read above. If it were not for the work force supplied by residents of the "bedroom communities" the sales tax collected (for Steamboat and Steamboat Schools) would be a fraction of what it is. Try operating any business or service in Steamboat without them. SoRoCo finally got the funds to replace an antiquated coal heating system, Hayden was able to replace badly worn carpet, and Steamboat..... well we have an artificial turf field, state of the art everything, building a new $500M playground, and now the real kicker, a $1.0 million dollar security system!! Get real Steamboat neighbors, not only will you have to soon stock the shelves and bag your own groceries, you may need to wait for the grocery delivery. This Steamboat "I want it all and I want it now" Y generation attitude makes me sick. The tourists may pay most of the tax, but those "out cast neighbors" are the ones at the cash register collecting it.
If Oak Creek has any left over candidates after Tuesday would you please send them to the county. It sure doesn't speak well for this county when OC can get 10 candidates and the county can't come up with anything better than the two unopposed commissioners!
another local, Great narrow minded analysis! As we all know a major portion of the south and west Routt population work in Steamboat (not to mention those of use considered Steamboat who pay taxes to more than one school district). These people work in positions within the Steamboat community which provide the goods and services to locals, and tourists, paying the tax. In your next analysis calculate the sales tax collected if all the Steamboat businesses were to only staffed by Steamboat residents!
Amen Mtnwarlock!!!! I cannot even buy enough motor oil at one time at our Wal Mart to change the oil in my diesel truck, "they don't stock that much". I have lived here over 50 years and believe me you could buy more of the day to day needs of a family 50 years ago than you can today. Affordable house should be expanded to "affordable living". For a working family to survive here affordability is far more than just a place to live. If Steamboat chooses not to allow the big box boys Craig and Hayden will. I make at lease one trip out of town a month (usually to the Denver area) and seem to never spend less than $1,000. If the city fathers of Steamboat and our transplanted mega-home owners don't want the "affordable living" component in Steamboat the leakage will only increase, whatever gas may cost. We all have a computer and can shop online letting UPS buy the gas. For the record we do not have a locally owned lumber yard. With Wal Mart's employee stock purchase plan I guess you could consider it locally owned!!
Omar, I find your stance on development and growth a bit hipocritical. You are one who has retired after doing a Steamboat residential project. Those of us who have been around for awhile recall you as a developer. I believe you live in and developed Campbell Subdivision!! My guess is that is was also annexed into the city at some point in the process.
Having retired after many years in commercial banking this is difficult for me to believe. With all the policies and proceedures in place EVERY employee, that includes the president, is subject to multiple systems of checks and balances. These are both internal and external including independent audits, state regulators, federal regulators, FDIC.... For this to have occured over a 2 1/2 year period without detection by the bank it is fair to assume Alpine has a serious flaw in its system, a "leak in the dike". No matter how "determined" the employee the system should be designed to detect such activity. Alpine needs a serious systems check, about $1.2MM worth of checking!
I'm a NO next time around, UNLESS there is some equitable sharing with South Routt and Hayden schools. These "non Steamboat" residents and parents spend plenty of $$$ in the Steamboat marketplace contibuting to the over $3 miliion expected to be collected in 08, yet receive nearly nothing from the tax collected. Oak Creek just got a new heating system replacing an antiquated coal system, yet Steamboat wants to spend over $1 million on security, using some of the sales tax funds! Give me a break!! We're not in LA or NY City.

Our View: Oak Creek's activism healthy

Would attracting big box retail stores be good for Steamboat Springs residents?
