Steve, your point is only valid if you accept that capitalism is a zero sum game, which philosophy will ultimately result in an overall dead economy locally due to lack of innovation and adoption to changes and efficiencies. The innovators and better "gameplayers" will merely move either just outside the city limits or to other municipalities nearby and the consumers will ultimately go there (or shop online).
Also, why would you state that you are glad our city reps do not listen to the public (consider public opinion as illustrated in these comments)? Sort of an egalitarian viewpoint, isn't it?
