Wayne Lemley: Mill levy a small cost for education

Throwing more taxpayer money at the school system isn't working too good. The US is ranked 17th for science and 25th for mathematics; our overall ranking compared to other countries have been dropping every year. We're NOT getting our monies worth.

I suggest that we need an independent audit of ANY organization which receives taxpayer monies (mill levys and subsudies). The State of Kansas is doing just that via their Attorney Generals Office.

We (taxpayers) should have the right to see how our dollars are being spent. I guarantee you there will be surprises. Or maybe we won't be surprised at the waste in overhead costs; programs that aren't cost effective.

John R. Adams: Ruling was right

Regarding the comment from Mr Adams "The District should consider refunding the huge surplus of taxpayer dollars it has accumulated over the years by virtue of the mill levy that is imposed on its constituents. Since there is no need for water projects at this time, why is there a need to collect a tax?"
I agree - the mill levy should be done away with for Upper Yampa. I would love to see my property taxes lowered a bit.

Dream Island under contract

question: Who is going to establish the baseline for "affordable housing" at DI?

sbsmon has me thinking along the same lines. The income of this community of 80 homes should be averaged and used as THE baseline to determine what is "affordable". After-all for whom is this being made affordable to?

Dream Island under contract

Hmmmmm.......And just how well did that work out with the last trailer park Jim Cook got his fingers on? Wake up Dream Island. There is only one message and only one outcome here. That's prime real estate you poor people are sitting on.

Main Street makeover

Concrete huh? How about a more artistic twist and color the concrete -
&/or stamping patterns in the concrete so it no longer looks like an interstate road? I know this looks great for residential projects - am uncertain how it would last with heavy traffic.

Fetcher, 96, to semi-retire

I'm quoting someone else here...."Anything good which happened in this valley can be attributed to John Fetcher". What more can anyone say?

Study to pinpoint retail needs

I agree with AmebaTost, why bother to provide galleries, shops and stores without considering adequate parking. There's a percentage of people from the front range who come up this way for the week with their vehicles. And plans for these new projects are lacking parking necessary for any increase in business traffic. Don't forget us locals, I like to drive and shop.

Property taxes rising

Ouch - I just visited the routt cnty website and saw that our property taxes doubled. Here's one middle class business owner that will be seriously considering leaving this community. Congrats Routt Cnty! For sending another small business owner packing!
