The people who make weapons and profit from warfare are the thousands of American working people who make average or below-average salaries working for defense contractors. Profit margins are a matter of contractual performance. If our government allowed us to procure weapons economically instead of shoving tons of regulatory and social constraints on the process, it would be a LOT cheaper.
You've been watching too many movies. If you could come and work in the system the way I did for many years, it would quickly become apparent to you that the main cost of weapons acquisition is the labor involved in the process and the fact that quantities are generally so small that the items are largely hand made. You don't tool up a factory to produce 400 of ANYTHING!
Frankly, Scarlet, most of the crimes you allege simply could not be pulled off by our government because the people who work in it are not that smart. The government does not pay well enough to hire top grads in science and engineering, and there's much more profit in the commercial sector than in defense. The people filling up the vending machines and grocery store shelves are the ones who make the money; consumer goods manufacturers. The markup on something like a fountain Coke is around 1000%
