Unbelievable...The best and biggest resorts, outside of the us, charge between $50 and $80 per day. It is important to make skiing accessible to the masses, not just the rich.

At least it will keep the crowds down come spring. I feel for the lodging and business community that will be hurt by limiting the numbers that come.

"The city, which has proven itself capable of making difficult budget decisions, cannot afford to continue to subsidize Howelsen Hill."

"Expenditures like the flower baskets and barrels are extremely important to our image as a worthwhile place to visit and spend money."

The editorial board really thinks that flowers on main street are more important to our community then Howelsen Hill. Steamboat is a worthwhile place to visit because of the flower baskets and the Christmas lights?

Howelsen is what made us Ski Town USA. It is a very special place and should be Steamboat Springs' ski area. The SSWSC does a great job, but it should not be up to them to fund the whole thing.

Bike Town USA is all about the marketing.

As much as I am for most of the projects and initiatives, I do no think our summer branding should be centered around a single slogan, for a single sport. What about the running events, kayaking, fishing, hiking, rodeo, art festivals, concerts, car events, and hundreds of other things to do in Steamboat in the summertime.

We need to get over the hurdles with the forest service to build bike trails on the mountain, and get the core trail extended west of town. Even then I think we will fall short of being the top bike community in the US in regard to bike infrastructure, number of bike commuters, or as a bike destination.

I think we need to promote our biking, but Bike Town USA is a stretch.

It made it to print because it is the editorial board of the paper.

Funny how the paper would not ban the advertising, and keep taking the money, when this is their position.

Don't forget the city will most likely have to start stocking the doggie doo pick up bags again if the fee is instituted. Some of the money generated should go to that.

If they are going to charge a fee, have it be for a reusable bag. Maybe it say Steamboat- "Green Town USA" ( just kidding) and they charge $.80 - $.90

Yampavalleyboy = Cramudgian

This event is going to be great, and is one of the biggest things to happen in town in years. I'm sure most of this town will roll out the welcome mat. Bring the bells, and lets show them some Steamboat Spirit.

The start of the waiting period got delayed by vacancies at the forest service? Why? and why is the waiting period followed by another 8 days? Shouldn't the 45 days be enough to mail something in. This is all because a few minor changes were made to the bike plan. Is the trail they plan to build different from what was approved prior? What exactly were the changes to the bike plan? After this are all the trails approved, and it will be up to ski corp to build as they see fit? This story needs some more detail.

How could they design the promenade / snow melt system into the easement and not have that secured? Sounds like another example of poor planning?

Good to see someone putting money into the local economy. City and county will see some money, as well as some local workers.

Thanks Charlie, and best of luck.

^ It may seem like that, but Howelson is a very special place. The hill, the SSWSC, and community support is what makes Steamboat world class. I wish I was lucky enough to grow up in such a wonderful place, and am very grateful my kids will.
