And somebody please explain to me how vertical curriculum integration addresses the academic needs of "groups of students (that) continue to fall through cracks in the system". Malarkey.
And what happens when the $300,000 surplus goes away? What happens when it is time to make cuts again? Are they going to cut this position or 3 classroom teachers? I cannot understand how Meeks sees this as a wise decision. The editorial board is right; he is rolling the dice with the financial stability of our schools.
"Without my own children in the school system, I will not feel conflicted between what is in the best interest of my children and what is in the best interest of the community as a whole."

I promise to campaign against any city council member that votes for this proposal. I understand this idea is rooted in good intentions, but it is misguided and lacks principle.
P.S. I use reusable bags every time I go to the grocery store.
This whole idea (the original idea from the article) is such a joke to begin with. You are trying to tell me that there are so many people in the community that want reusable bags, but cannot afford $5 for a set. Give me a break! This entire plan is so misguided.
I do understand charging for plastic/paper bags. If the users of disposable were charged a reasonable amount ($.05-.10) that could eliminate some overhead costs built into my groceries.

That said, I do wonder how we reconcile the hypocrisy of feeding marijuana to one student before school and suspending others for smoking it during lunch. Not saying she is wrong, but it does open a can of worms.

Only one year of world language? Is that really enought to prepare our kids for the world? Every day I find myself wishing I knew more Spanish.
