Can't the SS school system hire competent accountants? If this kind of thing happened repeatedly in the business world, heads would roll. Do none of these people understand numbers? First we spend in excess of $200,000 to pay off a superintendent's contract, then the BOCES fiasco, and now this. Add to that the loss of sensitive personal data from an unsecured computer. Maybe someone needs to shake things up a little.
I second the motion for a BK or Sonic. I don't like Big Mac's and the only thing on the menu across the street I can stomach is a Frosty. As to normal retail items, I'll continue to shop HD in Boulder or Avon when I'm there anyway, and when Steamboat has a game in Pallisade or GJ, I'll stop by Costco with a friend who has a card. I refuse to pay 30-50% more locally for items to remodel a bathroom or for Xmas presents. And I feel no guilt buying a jacket online from L. L. Bean's for $60 rather than for $100-200 at a local shop. In case no one has noticed, we're in tough economic times, and saving 30-50% on retail items makes my balance sheet look better at month's end. I'll continue to use businesses like Neste's Glass b/c they provide convenience and service that I can't match out of town. But a kitchen faucet is a kitchen faucet whether I buy it locally for $100 or from Home Depot for $60. I won't drive a hundred miles out of my way to shop, but since circumstances force me to be in the Denver/Boulder and Avon/Eagle area anyway, I'll save some money when I can. If there were a HD or Target in Steamboat, I would shop there instead of adding one more stop when I am on the road. Although driving to the west side of town is getting to be enough of a hassle that it still might be more convenient to stop in Avon or Boulder. Enough rambling. I guess what I'm trying to say is that families working for wages and living here are going to save money where they can to make ends meet. If it's more convenient or the same price to shop locally, they will. Otherwise, like me, they'll stop in Silverthorne or Boulder or Avon.
Is this a case of mismanagement or malfeasance? There is still so much of this story left untold. Who was the accountant? Where is she now? Was she just incompetent or is there money missing? Where did that money go? How could the director let things get this out of hand without noticing? We pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to fire superintendents, a school finance director let sensitive data get out on a personal laptop and we pay for a year of security monitoring, and now this. Makes one wonder about the competence of school administrators in the valley. Wonder how many teachers we could hire or how much equipment we could buy with all the mismanaged educational funds. My property taxes went up about 35% this year. It's great to know that that money is being so well managed.
Gee, I wonder how Cari will make headlines in the Pilot now that the election is over. Not to worry. We'll print an article about her intentions. Tomorrow we can maybe photograph her kissing a baby or planting a tree or something. I don't know Cari or have anything against her, but the newspaper's praising her and dissing Bennet was disgusting, and it looks like the trend will continue.
So the Pilot got to celebrate with Cari. So much for unbiased reporting. The newspaper's love affair with her borders on the unnatural. Kevin never had a chance.
20 and 25 mph speed limits through Sanctuary and golf course homes and a proposed Autobahn through the low rent district. I guess those of us without trust funds should just accept that we live on the first floor of a two story outhouse.
I try to buy local, but there's a limit. I've bought 5 of my last 6 vehicles here, and my house is filled with furniture and other stuff purchased locally. I needed a new backpacking stove and went to SA and SH. SA didn't have what I was looking for and showed no interest in helping me find it. SH had the item for $30 more than I could get it in Boulder or Denver from 5 different sources. I asked if they'd match the Boulder price and was told, "We don't do that." OK, I had to go to Boulder the next day and picked it up at REI for $30 less than here. You can't tell me that local businesses don't make more than 20% profit. If they'd rather not make a sale than cut into their huge profit margin, that's their decision, not mine. And saying, "No," doesn't constitute enough of a customer service for me to pay $30 extra. A friend of mine in Durango presented the same deal to his local vender who sold him the stove for $30 less and obviously still made a profit. And he fired up a demonstrator model to show my friend how to operate it.
IF YOU DON'T BUILD IT, THEY WON'T COME! Why doesn't someone on city council realize that we don't want this development? As long as we have a council controlled by developers, realtors, and others who gain monetarily from overdevelopment, the valley will deterriorate. And can't any of them see the contradiction in keeping big box stores out so we can keep the small town feel while simultaneously approving developments that will double the size of the town? It will result in living in a city without any of the advantages of living in a city. Lots of traffic, etc. but no Home Depot or Chili's or Costco.
And still we are filling the Gondola parking lot with condo's and building 108 foot high filing cabinets for human habitation. Where are all the people going to come from to fill all these places. Methinks there be pillows with no heads on them.
