Let's face it: Cafritz and the Atira Group are just Wal-Mart for the Vail-Aspen sociodemographic. They come in, profit, destroy a community, and then move on. You can see it starting now with the forcing out of the businesses who give Steamboat it's charm and identity.
I am not a lawyer so I don't know if any of what follows is legally possible. These are just some crazy ideas to fight wreckless developers in only place that matters to them--the bottom line!
1. The displaced business owners and the residents of Steamboat Springs should force the city to pass an ordinance establishing a 10-15% (or higher) "development zone tax" in a zone isolated to the shiny new Ski Times Square when it re-opens.
2. The citiznes of the should force the city of Steamboat Springs to establish a second ordinance creating a fee for every advertisement that uses the terms "Mount Warner" or "Steamboat Springs." that the developers or owners of businesses in Ski-Time Square produce.
Adios, Dos Amigos
Or, more simplely as a bumper sticker I saw yesterday read "Save an elk, shoot a land developer!"
