Crew revives spirit of Steamboat's Inferno this weekend

Good guess Matt, but it was Faces Lounge before it was The Inferno. Umm... who's Pam?

Crew revives spirit of Steamboat's Inferno this weekend

OK, here's a Steamboat triva question for you: What was the name of the bar that was there before it was the Inferno?

Our View: All-day kindergarten worthy of funding

Mr. Wedel,
In rebuttal to your prior post, I would first like to present the question – what is the purpose of public education? My opinion is that - it is not education for educations sake; it’s for preparing individuals to be productive members of society in a post high school world on a global scale. In fact that NEEDS to be the goal. I personally feel that placing so much emphasis on test scores is missing the point of what the ultimate goal of public school should be. And face the facts Scott; every aspect of the world we live in is submersed in computerized technology. Additionally, I would challenge you to name me an occupation that in some way is unaffected, or does not utilize, technology on a daily basis.
Your final statement does have some misguided validity. However, in a seminar I attended 2 years ago presented by the Federal Department of Education, The State of Maine Department of Education, and The Federal Trade Commission, they stated as a fact that the reason to have computers and “smart boards” in the classroom was that it motivated the students to engage in the learning process as opposed to being a passive classroom attendee.
The “proof” of the necessity for technology in classrooms is not in better test scores. It’s in the continued ability of the United States to be economically competitive on a global scale.

Our View: All-day kindergarten worthy of funding

1/2 day kindergarten is an outdated post-ww2 concept that is based on mommy stays home and only daddy works. Those days are over. My opinion is for mandatory full day kindergarten nation-wide. Ed Fund Board - please consider this funding proposal for the other Routt County schools as well.

Wedel - that article you have referenced is a narrow minded, weakly supported viewpoint that in no way encompasses a global, post high school perspective.

Steamboat School Board unable to reach consensus on food service to CMC

As traditional public school funding sources dribble away I look for districts to leverage existing assets to provide their own sources of revenue. As local businesses realize they are in competition for customers with a tax free entity, legislators will be forced to revoke tax exempt status on the portion of revenue that is self-generated. So what’s wrong with that? People don’t want to fully fund school districts needs via tax dollars, and complain at the same time public school does an inadequate job of educating their children. It’s time to change the business model of public education, and leverage assets to generate new profit centers.

Supporters push for free Wi-Fi throughout downtown Steamboat

Jay - Do it right the first time -

costs a little more than your $100 home unit, but this is what you want to use to have a first rate seamless wireless network that is easy to deploy, administer, and expand.

The tech part is easy. All the access points get the same name and configured in a cluster. They pass off from each other and your wireless device connects once within the cluster and it's seamless connectivity no matter wher you are receiving signal from.
I'll recommend a brand and model for busnesses to purchase and set the whole thing up for free.

Routt County launches poverty initiative

To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children,
to leave the world a better place,
to know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived,
this is to have succeeded.

Enrollment up at Steamboat Springs schools

"Meeks said the influx of students into Steamboat’s public schools has been spread out fairly evenly across grade levels"

"In Hayden, Superintendent Mike Luppes said ..... a drop he attributes to a larger senior class that graduated last year and a smaller incoming preschool class."

I think your logic is flawed Wedel.

None-the-less, there's a reason the CDE doesn't request enrollment reports from school districts until October. 10 or 15 new students enrolling isn't unusual during the first month of school in a district the size of Hayden or SoRoCo. Families move around the valley, situations change, new families move in from other areas, etc. You can't really assess enrollments until then.

Additionally, Hayden hasn't even started school yet - they received 5 new students on Friday September 2nd that probably weren't included in the above figures, and historically enroll another handful of students the first week of school.

As the above article points out - "the numbers are preliminary and subject to go up or down slightly before October’s official headcount is submitted to the state...".
