Brent Boyer: Realism trumps in these difficult times

I agree it would be of some mild interest to know what the situation is at Ski Corp. But, I don't bellieve there is any obligation, moral or legal, to provide this information. If the number is a 3% layoff figure, so what? How does it change what you are going to do. Give 'em a break.

Lu Etta Loeber: A call to sacrifice

Not in the awl biz, never was. Am into the conservation idea. I tend to think there is very little "conserve" in conservatives.
Oil as an energy source is not going away in our lifetime, but the sooner we start moving toward lessening our dependence on it, the safer we will be and the cleaner the earth will be. We can't drill our way out of this situation and the notion that we can "control" the price of oil by our own 3% decrease in demand is folly. There's a whole new industry, even a "bubble" out there for us all to make money in. RPI (the Rochester school) has just announced a major breakthrough in solar collector technology providing over 90% capture of solar energy. This is where the investment returns will be the greatest, in alternative sources, not more oil and coal.

Lu Etta Loeber: A call to sacrifice

Each of us can find ways to conserve and this is a good start. We are in the midst of an energy crisis that is not going away just because gas prices have come down a bit. Boone Pickens rightly tells us that we cannot drill our way out of this situation and as soon as the world economy turns around we'll be right back where we were. If you haven't looked at his plan, do so at www.pickensplan.com. If we don't start moving toward alternative energy now, we'll just be putting off a more dire situation in the near term future. Demand that our legislators take bold steps to move us in this direction. Now!

Rob Douglas: Chief issues gag order, threats

Woody Paige, the Denver sports columnist, frequently has said "why don't we just lock them all in a room and see what happens". That is a scary thought here as some of them have guns. I am worried about where this whole mess is going. Who are the voices of moderation and sanity?

Conservative commentary: Progressive groups remodeling Colorado

A few observations;

I agree, the success or failure of Bush's policies may not be be known for years, but one thing is certain, we will be paying for them for those many years. George Will likes to call these "transaction costs" as a way of dismissing them. Some costs!

"Conservatives favor limited govt." No evidence from Bush's regime except that there has been a sbustantial privatisation of services during the last 8 agaonizing years but these are being paid for by the people so I don't see where this has gained much, if anything. It seems to me this canard holds true until a conservative wants a favor. I would like to update Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2, where he says "the first thing we do is kill all the lawyers". Change lawyers to read lobbyists. Come to think of it, this would do away with a lot of lawyers too.

When the wind stops? You're right, it does, but this argument has NO validity whatsoever in relation to why we should not move to tap wind and solar (which only stops in the dark). Isn't this why any NASA mission to the sun would have to be at night?

Global warming-I wonder how many people who dismiss this as fuzzy science willingly accept intelligent design?

Ich bin nicht ein Georgian.

Conservative commentary: Colorado's 'no energy' economy

I posted this last week repsonding to another column/discussion. It is just as applicable here and required no additional use of carbon.

We now have the best opportunity we have ever had to move away from an oil based energy economy toward renewables. Why has no one mentioned that conservation is the best current option rather than drilling our way out of it. T Boone Pickens gets it, says it, and is putting his money behind renewables. Ethanol is a boondoggle funded by our tax dollars. Wind and solar are the future and if we are going to subsidize some sort of energy, this is the direction to go. MIT has just announced a major breakthrough in solar. I say we cannot afford to allow gasoline to be cheap again. It will only delay the opportunity we have in front of us now. Behavior will change, consumers will adjust. No one should be guaranteeing that our gas guzzlers should be inexpensive to operate.
