It is long overdue that the beneficiaries of using the howelsen hill ski area and the sswsc members pay the actual cost of running the facility. How difficult can it be to take the operation costs divided by sswsc participants and day skiers to come up with the cost of ski passes/lift ticket fees to cover that expense? When times are tough even traditions must be re-evalued, changed or even scrapped completely. City taxes should be applied towards providing basic services for its residents. Subsidizing a private organization, benefitting few is not basic service. If money can be saved and returned to the tax payers all of us would benefit.

City council, in an effort to make things right, ought to waive collecting taxes from the disadvantaged business owner. It is patently unfair to hold businesses to different standards and thereby causing financial harm. City should be punished financially for this action! In lieu of this, i would urge the negatively impacted business to sue the city for damages.

Charge $500 each for the winter sports club athletes

Charge the rodeo promoters $50,000 per rodeo event

Both great ideas.

Why exactly are tax payers dumping almost one million dollars per year into a facility used only by a very small portion of the community?

If it is really such a valuable experience then let the users cover the true costs of that experience. Spending such extravagant amounts of limited funds, so that a few can recreate, at the expense of many is ludicrous.

If the users are unwilling or unable to pay the operating expense then it is time to either lower the taxes on the rest of us or redirect the money towards real city government responsibilities.

I want my kids to learn to respect rules and regulations for both their safety and others around them. Coaches with the winter sportsclub program are rolemodels, and should help instill adherence to these safety rules. It appears that to make a buck that they are willing to compromise the standard they boast of oferring the youth of steamboat. Shame on rick devos, sarah floyd for approving this potentially illegal venture with our children. Shame on you for your total disregard to promoting safe programs. Any tragedies associated with this idea will expose the club, its leaders and board directors to lawsuits. The only right thing to do is to formally cancel this dangerous and illegal idea.

How many children, which is what we are talking about, should be encouraged to ski out of bounds, by winter sports club coaches?
