Commissioners OK cut of Building Department position

Bigfatdog is correct.....it all boils down to inefficiencies. And if the county cut out that kind of waste and lets be honest, some dead weight, wouldn't that cut the budget? They can hack away and any department they want, but until they cut the waste it will do no good. And you are correct in another thing, I do not do actual business with the Road and Bridge Department. But we in South Routt and other areas do appreciate having the roads plowed so that we may get to work in our clunkers.

Commissioners OK cut of Building Department position

Aichempty has taken care of the Building Department so I would like to address the Road and Bridge Department. I wonder if the commissioners realize that the equipment operators are the same people that plow the snow? How do you make that a seasonal position? The men with the CDL are the same men who run the graders year round. When these men aren't hauling gravel and fixing roads they are plowing snow or fixing the damage caused by long winters and muddy springs. And reducing the number of miles the county plows? What if it actually snows? The county has already taken away the overtime hours from these men so who will plow if it snows? This should be an interesting winter.

Our View: County correct with salary move

There is one safety issue that the county commissioner could not have forseen and are probably unaware of. And that is the safety of all the men now on furlough. I am refering to the men who have now invaded their wives domain. No woman wishes to have her husband who now has nothing to do and no money to do it with hanging about the house. These once busy men are now in real danger and I would venture to say that they take their lives in their hands each and every time they enter their homes. All kidding aside, this article has answered one question that has been nagging me. Why would the sheriff's department have a safety issue if they are working the regular hours? Unless Sheriff Wall is refering to the hiring freeze, there is no reason why their service should not remain the same just like every other department. This article also raises a question for me. Will the cuts the county has made still be a matter of inconvenience when the snow comes?

County restores some salaries

I wonder if the county realizes what it has just done. Restoring pay and overtime to some departments and not others is going to cause a great deal of discourse among the work force. Did they not just lay off 3 county employees? To save money? Do they not realize that they have just opened up a whole new can of worms?

County commissioners to hear additional cut-related requests

Ok.....let me see if I understand this correctly. The county gives a 10 percent furough, which in a 40 hour week comes to 4 hours. Aren't all departments doing the same? Aren't all departments providing less service? Wasn't that the whole idea?

Our View: Layoffs a difficult, but correct, move

Yes it is a difficult move to hand down lay offs. But, wouldn't the correct move be for the commisioners to take a good look at the problems within. The furlough that they put into place has done nothing but cause confusion. Work schedules that change from week to week. Comp time instead of over time that must be used or it is lost, which means more confusion because no one knows who is working when. Each department knows where it carries its dead weight but no one wants to be the bad guy and be responsible for someone being laid off. The men and women who work for the county watch and wonder everyday why some of this waste is allowed to continue all the while worring about their own jobs. The right move would be to take a good hard look with in. If this isn't done more jobs will be lost and the problem of waste will continue.
