Sunday evening, and glory be, we're having sunshine. I'm eager to get out and enjoy the fall colors. A lot of trees have already lost their leaves.

No snow on the trees this morning. Sure thought there would be, according to the weather report. But, it's cold! Out in front of my cabin, next to the shop, are two little bright yellow dandelions. How pretty!

What a glorious time of year! For most of September we've been watching the aspens change from a green to yellow, orange and red. This past week has been every color in every direction. Like I've said before, "Autumn is my favorite time of year until spring comes."

Oh wow! This has been an exciting week. Are the aspens going to be in full color by next weekend? Well, no, it will be another week. Of course, we can never tell until it happens, but it is beautiful right now, with some lovely reds and oranges.

It's always good to drive the pink Jeep up Hahn's Peak mountain and enjoy the beauty all around.

What a great Labor Day weekend it was at historic Hahn's Peak. It's always a special time when local year-rounders are home for the holiday, kids are not in school and summer weekenders come for last-of-summer fun time.

Autumn is approaching fast. Down the valley, there are already bits of yellow among the aspen and cottonwoods, most of the hummingbirds are gone south to the Gulf of Mexico. Buttons is taking his cattle out, the smoke from the forest fires is still with us, but the fishing is still good.

Oh me! What a miserable day was Sunday. The forest fires have taken off again, and the air is free of smoke, and the wind has been blowing real hard. How disturbing it is to go out in the evening and see the fires blazing high up on the mountains east of here.

Last week I mentioned that the hummingbirds were back in full force. Well, I was over at Brinks in Captains Cove the other evening and watched masses of them at their feeder. There must have been 20 all at once, but I couldn't count fast enough to be sure. Did you know that this is the only bird that can fly backwards?

Yes, the hummingbirds are still darting around the feeders, storing up to go south soon. The grasshoppers are shredding a lot of my petunias. But one amazing thing is that while a lot of the wildflowers have been pale and puny this summer, the fireweed, now in full bloom is tall, beautiful and big. You probably know fireweed wasn't named for color, but because it is the first flower that blooms after a forest fire.
