Freeskiers wrap up season

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club

It wasn't the best result for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freeskiing team, but Owen Taylor’s performance in the halfpipe at United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association national championships in Copper Mountain last week stood out, nevertheless.

Taylor, competing in the boys 12-13 division, ended up 28th, but only after he broke a ski on his first run. He finished on his other ski, skied to the bottom of the mountain, got a new ski, made the trip back to the top and came through with his finish.

That kind of attitude persisted throughout the team's performance at its final event of the season.

Riley Jacobs led the way for local skiers with a first-place finish in the girls 12-13 halfpipe competition. She also was fourth in a rail jam, then sixth in slopestyle.

Cael McCarthy put together a strong competition, as well. He flew to second in the boys 10-11 slopestyle. He backed that up with a third-place showing in halfpipe.

Wiley Wagner had his best result in halfpipe at the boys 10-11 level. He placed seventh there. He was 56th in slopestyle.
