I ski almost daily in the backcountry practically from our door in Columbine. The snowpack this year is very dangerous. The base layer is has a very unstable sugar like consistancy.
Then we recieved a warming trend and rain and then freeze which created an ice layer, followed by 2 ft. of snowfall last week. We immediately saw naturally and user created avalanches and many deaths even on ski areas last week. The avalanches seem to be going down to this freeze layer and are about 2 ft. deep.
I would recommend being very informed and well equiped before venturing into the backcountry this year. That means reading avalanche reports and warnings before venturing into the backcountry and being equiped with beacons, shovels, probes when skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling anything over 30 degrees.
Tell someone where you are going beforehand.
