I think routt county has their fingers in enough pies. I think it is a drain on county funds.

yvb, I have asked for that info. I don't know why you think it would that inconvenient for them because they generate the report once and just hand it out to everyone that asks.

Yes, the newspaper sometimes displays an amazing failure to ask basic questions of government such as how much does this or that cost.

Oh well.

Town of Oak Creek just spent twice as much for the Town Clerk's going away party than they've budgeted for next year's Labor Day event!

$400 for a going away for a town government with 4.5 full time positions. And for an employee that quit after 5 pm on Oct 18 when coincidentally there was a special town board meeting at 5:30 pm that went into executive session to discuss a personnel matter. So she didn't see a need to quit until after the town board met to discuss a personnel matter. And now her going away party was twice as valuable to the town government than the Labor Day events!

WHAT my first post said I was guessing LOW and then I had to repost-- ok going with my gut this was at LEAST a $30k gig--

Phoebe my Dear, you are low, sorry try again if you will. This will only go on for 1 more hour. Promise! yvb

November 30, 2011 at 8:44 p.m.

the hour is up

Scott Wedel 5 years, 5 months ago

yvb, When I posted the hour was up and it was prior to your 10:24 pm post on another blog. See mine was posted at 10:06 pm.

Or does it really take you 20 minutes to write that sort of one sentence post? :)

Anyway, good work. Newspaper article and maybe editorial might have been a bit different if it included facts like that which disrupt the pro-tourism narrative.

BTW, wasn't there an article earlier quoting a YVRA official saying there was a 10 foot hole in the floor due to a mechanical issue? Why did that story disappear?

How is the subsidizing the restaurant with tax money any different than subsidizing airlines with a sales tax money?

Scott Wedel 5 years, 5 months ago

RPG, Exactly. Virtually anything can be justified as needing to be done to help tourism.

The question that remains is how much is worth spending on what tourism amenity.

Scott Wedel 5 years, 5 months ago

Oh yeah, there it is. The link in my history from yesterday came up with a broken link and the article got old enough to not be on the recent news list.

As for YVRA and county General Fund, two different pots in the same kitchen. Not the same pot, but not hard to slop some costs from one to the other. YVRA is paying the County $500K a year for administrative services. If they are getting $700K worth of services then county is silently subsidizing YVRA $200K.

And yvb, When I said your hour was up was 20 minutes before you posted it on another blog. So I was paying attention when I wrote that.

I have had issues logging in on the thread about the leak at Three Wire but can get on here for some reason so will leave my comments here.

I raised some unanswered questions about this restaurant, namely:

1.) How can they claim to be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner when the article states their hours ending at 2 pm daily?

2.) Since the County is footing the numerous bills for this venture, shouldn't the restaurant offer some sort of discount for legal residents of the County... who pay for at least some of it? What happens to any operating profits?

3.) Three Wire is billed as a Bar & Grill. Well enough, but it means our County employees are serving alcohol as well as food, and receiving tips. When is a County employee not a County employee? If I read this right, we now have County employees serving alcohol in a taxpayer funded restaurant, competing with restaurants owned by the... taxpayers of the County. I'm not in the restaurant business in any way (and can't afford to eat out much) but surely if I was I would see the County competing (with my tax dollars) against my own business!

The "destination" in this destination resort is NOT the airport. In my opinion travelers should have some minimal food options there but should not be encouraged to linger/spend their dollars in the airport in a restaurant with enormous competitive advantages.

If we taxpayers subsidize flights to get tourists here, we should at a minimum expect to find them patronizing our local restaurants to rejuvenate themselves, either with food or alcohol. That way our local taxes can continue to help fund Three Wire into perpetuity. Hand that feeds ya, you know.

yvb, I am not saying that I know or think that the county is subsidizing YVRA by $200K. I was just using that as an example of the sort of hidden transfer of resources that can be done between different funds controlled by the same board.

Because they are sharing resources then it is extremely hard to determine, especially for someone not in their finance dept, whether that is going on. It is the type of hidden subsidy that one finance director will say doesn't exist and the next finance director will view things differently and find subsidizes in one direction or the other.
