I agree - making housing more expensive will not make it more affordable. Government interference will only exacerbate the problem.

As mentioned by sbvor, those that BUY affordable housing will be hurt the most. When the market goes down, or the government decides to reduce the price of new affordable homes, those that bought are left with a painful decision: go into foreclosure or stay in the house forever. Drive through the Stapleton and Lowry neighborhoods in Denver and you will see the affordable housing dispersed in the neighborhoods. Many, and in some areas most, of the small (ie, affordable) homes are either empty or have forclosure notices on them. Those that buy affordable homes will have a choice: ruin your credit and get out of the home, or be a slave to the home for decades. Affordable housing is also the death of the middle class. Buying a home, then stepping up a couple of times during your life, will no longer be possible. Those that buy an affordable house either are stuck or ruin their credit, and most of the others will not be able to buy because of the artifically-increased prices created by the government.
