As we have unfortunately seen lately, security cameras may not prevent crime, but they do add to the sensational headline reporting after the damage is done. Petty crime may be deterred, but most likely not tragic crime.

Security is much more important than privacy in public schools. Forgoing the important benefits of catching bullies in the act, detecting contraband and other suspicious activities in order to protect someone's privacy in a public place does not make good sense.

The only thing installing security cameras would accomplish is adding to the tension between students and staff.
The disciplinary system in the school district is very efficient as it is. For many students, school is a relatively stressfull place. Knowing that you are always being watched would certainly not make the atmosphere any safer or friendlier.
