The Purple Pinkie Project is an effort by Rotary Club's across the nation, including the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs, to raise money to administer polio vaccine in third world counties. When a Rotary volunteer administers the vaccine in one of those third world countries, the child's pinkie is colored with the topical solution Gentian Violet — temporarily marking the child to prevent double dosage on National Immunization Days. In Steamboat Springs on Monday, children who made a donation had their pinkies colored purple as part of a symbolic showing of support for the project.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper investigates a wrecked motorcycle along Routt County Road 14 on Monday afternoon. State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said a man lost control of his motorcycle and was ejected from it. The man, who has been identified as Niall McNeice, 24, of Steamboat Springs, was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center after he suffered serious injuries.
