West Routt Fire Protection District firefighters help extinguish a controlled burn on a property Sunday afternoon near mile marker 115 on U.S. Highway 40. At about 3:40 p.m., the fire was well contained, despite high east-to-west winds in the area. The Routt County Office of Emergency Management advises property owners conducting controlled burns to contact the Routt County Communications Center to report the location, size of the area to be burned, start/finish time, material to be burned and property ownership, and advises them not to burn on windy days. Hikers walk by a cluster of wildflowers at Steamboat Lake State Park. Although some of the most popular hiking trails in Routt County remain muddy and snowpacked after a long winter, there are many early season hikes now open all across the county. Scott Franz/file
