Taylor Fletcher trains on the large hill for Nordic combined at the 2014 Winter Olympics. This photo is from a spot at the bottom and to one side of the large hill, one of four main spots available to photographers during the jumping portion of the events. It’s great the way the “Sochi” signs lines up — there are so many that they always seem to line up — but there are only so many times you can shoot this shot, so I tried other things in other visits to the jumping center. Vic Wild waits after winning a gold medal in the men's parallel giant slalom Wednesday. I wasn't able to get his immediate reaction, but I worked my way down the mountain and was able to get nice, clean shots of Wild moments after he finished his race. Sadly, in my case, he wasn't waving his arms and celebrating, the kind of actions that lead to awesome photographs. Photo by Joel Reichenberger

Japan's Tomoka Takeuchi, near, rides Wednesday in the parallel giant slalom event at the 2014 Winter Olympics. This is a shot no one else seemed to want. It's understandable in a way, as there's no obvious and easy way to include the mountains in the background. Ideally, there would have been a spot where the mountains would have been the backdrop with a long lens, a 400mm, for instance. As it was, I used a wide angle zoom, which worked, but included much of the clutter along the side of the run. Photo by Joel Reichenberger

Caroline Calve rides down the parallel giant slalom course Wednesday. I stepped about 8 feet away from a gaggle of photographers to get the mountain backdrop. It was nice, but the coaches gawking in the background take away to some degree. Photo by Joel Reichenberger

Alena Zavarzina celebrates a bronze medal on Wednesday. I like this shot because it’s a different view of her celebration, and you can see all the Russians cheering with her. A shot from the back of the finish corral, the most coveted and popular spot for photographers, still may have been better. Photo by Joel Reichenberger

Vic Wild flies down the parallel giant slalom run on his way to a gold medal. The vantage point for this photo was nice, as the racers come over a small rise that covers any of the junk that cluttered up the background of most shots. It was a popular view for photographers, many of whom simply did not move, photographing every single race from exactly this spot. Photo by Joel Reichenberger

Justine Dufour-Lapointe celebrates after winning gold in women’s moguls. I was off to the side for the photo, in position for a celebration but which was not always ideal. It worked out great, however, as she turned away from the prime photo positions at the back of the finish corral and toward me. Photo by Joel Reichenberger
