Sal Gonzalez laughs as he takes a tumble on a slope at Steamboat Ski Area on Sunday during the STARS and Stripes Heroes Camp. Gonzalez lost the lower portion of his left leg in 2004 in an IED explosion in Iraq. He said camps like this offer important opportunities for veterans to get out of their houses, achieve goals and meet people who have gone through similar situations.

More than two dozen United States military veterans attended the inaugural STARS and Stripes Heroes Camp in Steamboat Springs. They all came with different stories, but their shared experience proved invaluable.
